This customer had a very small space near their front door that was underutilized. We designed this small mudroom unit to fill this nook with shoe storage, a small bench, and hooks for coats.

Despite an extremely steep, almost undevelopable, wooded site, the Overlook Guest House strategically creates a new fully accessible indoor/outdoor dwelling unit that allows an aging family member to remain close by and at home. Photo by Matthew Millman

Looking at this home today, you would never know that the project began as a poorly maintained duplex. Luckily, the homeowners saw past the worn façade and engaged our team to uncover and update the Victorian gem that lay underneath. Taking special care to preserve the historical integrity of the 100-year-old floor plan, we returned the home back to its original glory as a grand, single family home. The project included many renovations, both small and large, including the addition of a a wraparound porch to bring the façade closer to the street, a gable with custom scrollwork to accent the new front door, and a more substantial balustrade. Windows were added to bring in more light and some interior walls were removed to open up the public spaces to accommodate the family’s lifestyle. The homeowners recently moved from California and wanted a “modern farmhouse” with lots of metal and aged wood that was timeless, casual and comfortable to match their down-to-Earth, fun-loving personalities. They wanted to enjoy this home themselves and also successfully entertain other business executives on a larger scale. We added furnishings, rugs, lighting and accessories to complete the foyer, living room, family room and a few small updates to the dining room of this new-to-them home. All interior elements designed and specified by A.HICKMAN Design. Photography by Angela Newton Roy (website: http://angelanewtonroy.com)
