Stone and planting design and installation and photography by Chris Kolb of Ark Gardens. Chris first designed and installed the tumbled bluestone walkway for this aromatic Cape Cod cottage style garden. He wanted to give it a little flare so he inflected the curve as opposed to creating a straight line. Chris flanks the pathway with two native female berrying Eastern Red Cedars and two native blooming Rhododendron viscosum (Honeysuckle Azalea) cultivars, one pink one yellow. The client requested a fragrant garden, hence the native Azaleas and foundation border lilies among Lavender and many fragrant native plants.

With a limited budget, we were able to transform and update this front garden with a new modern pathway, a small patio, and a variety of low-water and low-maintenance plants. The black mulch completes this modern landscape design transformation. By the Springtime the plants will fill in nicely, and provide a variety of heights, colors and textures. © Eileen Kelly, Dig Your Garden Landscape Design

Concrete slab and deck sections create a path to the front door in a sea of decorative pebbles. This is all about the design and very limited water and maintenance needed. Photo by Ketti Kupper

This tired, unused San Francisco backyard was transformed into a modern, low-maintenance landscape with site-appropriate plantings enhanced by raised planting beds and a lead-free artificial lawn to replace the existing water-thirsty lawn. I created two separate "rooms" to break up the long narrow yard, and specified full range blue stone for the two small patio areas, connected by a curved pattern of rectangular pavers of the same natural stone. The raised concrete rectangular planting beds were incorporated to bring more movement and interest to the landscape along with gravel bed accents alongside. Some of the existing concrete remained, and was stained with a color to compliment the natural stone. These photos were taken over a three year period. An inner city oasis with enchanting planting using a tapestry of textures, shades of green and architectural forms to evoke the tropics of Australia. Here, ferns and geraniums spill over the granite plank paving.
Sweet Smiling Landscapes
This condo garden was dead and depressing space. By adding beautiful pottery, some antique wrought iron and a soft romantic planting scheme, we transformed the space in to a tranquil garden.

Fresh concrete with repeating linear cutouts are planted with Elfin Thyme. A staggered path of limestone tiles will frame a forthcoming sculpture. Crushed salt and pepper quartz complete the low maintenance, low water use look.

To gain more usable space in this narrow landscape and update the hardscaping and overgrown garden, my design reconfigured the pathway with poured-in-place concrete (cast concrete) pavers accented by Mexican pebbles and a stunning variety of succulents and other site-appropriate plantings that thrive in shade and part sun. We removed the tree to create a patio area large enough to fit a table and chairs for a small group. Non-invasive/clumping Bamboo was added to help screen the patio and provide privacy. Other shade to part-shade plants were included that provide a variety of textures and colors throughout the seasons. Low-voltage lighting was installed for safety and ambiance.
