A beautiful old drawer console has been turned into a washstand, thanks to a hole drilled into the top and the back in order to evacuate the water. A matching rustic stool completes the picture.

The house was built in 1963 and is reinforced cinder block construction, unusual for California, which makes any renovation work trickier. The kitchen we replaced featured all maple cabinets and floors and pale pink countertops. With the remodel we didn’t change the layout, or any window/door openings. The cabinets may read as white, but they are actually cream with an antique glaze on a flat panel door. All countertops and backsplash are granite. The original copper hood was replaced by a custom one in zinc. Dark brick veneer fireplace is now covered in white limestone. The homeowners do a lot of entertaining, so even though the overall layout didn’t change, I knew just what needed to be done to improve function. The husband loves to cook and is beyond happy with his 6-burner stove.

Sklar StudiosRotating the entry to the hallway for what once was a small walk-in bedroom closet, and turning it into this sweet powder room was certainly value added. The rich blue, dimensional wall tile has a modernist tone and pattern and works perfectly in concert with the classic marble penny tile floor. The wall hung toilet saves space, is easy to clean around, and looks slick.
Courtney Thomas DesignOur La Cañada studio juxtaposed the historic architecture of this home with contemporary, Spanish-style interiors. It features a contrasting palette of warm and cool colors, printed tilework, spacious layouts, high ceilings, metal accents, and lots of space to bond with family and entertain friends.
