The homeowners had several mid-century furnishings that fit in with crisp clean lines in the kitchens. The home now can be a beauty to last for many years while relaxing on the beach.

Kitcheart LLCThis was a kitchen renovation of a mid-century modern home in Peoria, Illinois. The galley kitchen needed more storage, professional cooking appliances, and more connection with the living spaces on the main floor. Kira Kyle, owner of Kitcheart, designed and built-in custom cabinetry with a gray stain finish to highlight the grain of the hickory. Hardware from Pottery Barn in brass. Appliances form Wolf, Vent-A-Hood, and Kitchen Aid. Reed glass was added to the china cabinets. The cabinet above the Kitchen Aid mixer was outfitted with baking storage. Pull-outs and extra deep drawers made storage more accessible. New Anderson windows improved the view. Storage more than doubled without increasing the footprint, and an arched opening to the family room allowed the cook to connect with the rest of the family.

Small Kitchens in traditional older homes present an opportunity for the designer and cabinet maker. Function, space and ease in accommodating a guest or two represent a few of the necessary considerations. Careful planning while creating custom features will ensure a useful kitchen in harmony with contemporary living. Establishing upper cabinets at the ceiling height extends storage while glass doors at the bar area continues to push open the kitchen. By placing the bar surface at the same height as the counter we’ve established an unbroken line to further increase the sense of space. Designing valence and header panels over the window in the same style as the kitchen's doors provides continuity to this custom kitchen and to the history of the home.
The home was built in the 1920's in an urban Virginia environment. As was so often the case in the appointments of the home the kitchen was given little space and short attention to design. Opening the kitchen to a hall space with careful attention to simple but functional design enabled a successful arrangement serving the modern lifestyle.

The door style is beadboard Somerset Full Overlay with Slab Drawer Fronts. The cabinets have a Signature Black Rub-Through with Honeytone base Stain as well as cracking, wearing and distressing to reflect the character of the home. Scottish Meadow Granite sits on top of the cabinets. The backsplash tiles are Ottimo handmade ceramic subway.
