Living Landscapes
The Natural GardenThe Natural Garden
We call these gardens "living landscapes" because the native plants they contain seed off and change locations from year to year in a dynamic, dramatic show. The gardener becomes audience, director, and dramaturge--all in one--rather than one who tightly controls the results. (What is a dramaturge, one might ask if their friends are not in the theater?) Oxford languages explains: "1. a dramatist. 2. a literary editor on the staff of a theater who consults with authors and edits texts." In living landscapes, the native plants become a sort of text which the gardener edits in order to shape the unfolding drama for the current and next season. The gardener chooses where to pull back overly assertive plants, when to nudge forward the under-confident actor waiting to shine, when to let the mystery unfold and surprise. It is not laissez-faire or "what will be will be"--rather, it is an ongoing movement rooted in observation and reflection. This is the living landscape we strive to design and build at The Natural Garden.

To create a warm and inviting front entrance, lighting designer Coleman highlighted the front porch columns and added path lights to the front walkway. The home didn't need much additional illumination with the existing mini can lights. "We focused on the landscape, accenting the trees and natural stone wall to create balance and add interest to the yard," he says. This garden in Offham Village has been transformed with prairie planting with added shrubs and specimens. Soft approach, limited palette cottage style with a modern twist. Colours - Pink, Purple, white with greens of many textures. Added yellow around the cascading pond with Iris pseudacorus planted in the marginal areas. We have used local Kentish ragstone, quarried less than two miles away, to create the retaining walls. This garden has been the venue for our client's 50th wedding anniversary as well as raising funds for charity by opening the gates for the public to enjoy. We continue to work closely with our clients, guiding them on the aftercare required to keep their beautiful garden looking sharp.

Our client spared no expense on this beautiful project, using massive rock slab steps on both sides of the house leading to the expansive back yard. The front utilizes natural rock for accents, address rock, and raised planters. We also used concrete edge as well as imported a 20mm aggregate from a quarry in BC for the beds to better match the house. A large paver patio in the back is the foundation for the gas custom fire pit and a dry river bed at the low spot carries any sheet drainage out the back to the natural area outside the property.
