This renovation and extension transforms a mid-19th-century Schoolmaster’s House, originally designed by Gothic Revival architect William Butterfield. Built in the 1850s as part of Archdeacon John Sandford’s educational initiative, the building showcases Butterfield’s hallmark use of polychrome brickwork and crafted detail. Research supported by the Alvechurch Historical Society, The Bromsgrove Society, and the Hive Archives – together with the discovery of original drawings – revealed the building’s original fabric and informed our design strategy. The scheme balances historic sensitivity with contemporary living. Unsympathetic late-20th-century alterations were removed to restore clarity, while new interventions create light, proportion, and connection to the garden. The extension draws inspiration from Butterfield’s brick patterns, its distinct yet referential form enhanced by a frameless corner window. At the centre of the design, the former courtyard becomes the heart of the home. Original brickwork and an arched door are revealed, their patina preserved, with natural stone flooring referencing the historic surface. Elsewhere, a historic entrance has been reinstated, and a brick arch within the chimney exposed, now closed with weathered copper. High-performance insulation and triple glazing improve comfort and energy efficiency. The result is both restoration and reinvention – a respectful dialogue between past and present, creating a home rooted in history and ready for the future.

An intimate, smart and dramatic feel was what we set out to achieve with this formal dining room that sits at the heart this family home. I was immediately drawn to Lewis & Wood’s incredible range of mural-style botanical wallpapers but wanted to ensure the design was muted and sat quietly on the walls above a new dado and panelling that would elevate the room. The paint colours chosen were Charleston Gray for the panelling, Rolling Fog for the doors and Shaded White (all by Farrow & Ball) for the ceiling. The wallpaper is Adam’s Eden in Roan which sits very comfortably alongside the textured Birdlip Twill window dressings in Slade also by Lewis & Wood; the reverse of which was used as a border trim down each curtain and the blind. Sourcing an oval, extendable, pedestal dining table of the perfect dimensions for the space was a huge challenge, so Norfolk Interior Specialists created this bespoke oak piece with beautiful spherical pedestal legs. Under this sits a stunning antique carpet sourced by Farnham Antique Carpets. Pendants over the table are by Visual Comfort and glossy Gourd vase lamp bases on the antique side table in tortoiseshell from Vaughan.

We first fell in love with Kyal and Kara when they appeared on The Block and have loved following their progress. Now we watch them undertake their first knock-down rebuild with the fabulous Blue Lagoon beachside family home. With their living, dining and kitchen space, Kyal and Kara have created a true heart of the home. Not only is this a space for family and friends to hang out, it also connects to every other area in the home. This fantastic open plan area screams both functionality and design – so what better addition than motorised curtains! The entire kitchen was designed around multi-tasking, and now with just the press of a button (or a quick “Hey Google”), you can be preparing dinner and close the curtains without taking a single step.
