H2 XERO Landscape Design
This arid garden photo was taken just after the garden was installed so the plants are still small. Within a year, the shrubs in the background will hide the block perimeter wall and the neighbor's shed. An important part of landscape design is to solve visual problems. We used blue-black Mexican river rock to create the illusion of water in the permeable dry river. We call this style, our lush desert or soft desert design. The color theme is silver foliage or leaves, blue cactus, yellow flowers, blue flowers, accented by a dash of hot mango. Photo by Tina Cremer, H2 XERO Landscape.

Plant focus: Lomandra longifolia 'Breeze'. SEE PHOTOS TAKEN AFTER 2 YEARS. This San Rafael front landscape has been dramatically updated with a welcoming concrete pathway entrance, and complimented by a variety of architectural plants, hardy succulents, textural grasses and a majestic, fruitless olive tree. The dramatic transformation is enhanced by a raised corten steel planter at the pathway entrance with gravel and succulents. Two horizontal ipe wood structures provide contemporary accents. New raised concrete planters alongside the new concrete driveway define the property and showcase more colorful succulents. A beautiful gray house paint color and ipe accents complete the remodel.

OUTHOUSE design
Oversized step stones make access easy, and maintenance is a thing of the past with a deep layer of gravel.

Simply gorgeous at tour time, the water positive features at the Retreat go to work during rainy season. Expansive tree canopy slows rainfall. Large shrubs and ground covers help spread it. Rock bands in the driveway catch and redirect it into planted spaces. Bioswales help the garden sink water into the groundwater table.
In fall and winter, the copper leaves of a Western Redbud add a pop of seasonal color to an abundance of lush, leafy greenery. Along the right, several native holly leafed cherry shrubs define the property line, providing privacy as they feed the birds.
Urban Oasis Landscape Design
We retained the canyon walls and built a patio into the hillside where they can walk down and enjoy the beautiful canyon views. The hillside is planted predominantly with California natives and will need little irrigation once established. Photo by Debbie Gliksman

The gently sloping yard is divided into two distinct areas.
We kept a large grassy area for the dogs and to offset the large patio.
Instead of a harsh retaining we used the slope to create a natural stone stream bed that collects rainwater and drains it away from the house.
Garden Guru Services
The 'Fat Albert' Blue Spruce was used to break up the concrete wall as it grows over time. 'Color Guard' Yucca provide great year-round color.

The original zen garden is updated with slate chip mulch and a birds nest spruce. Boulders original to the site were relocated as needed.

New garden complete. Pea gravel path leads users through a native plant garden with the essence of a geological feature. The grassland provides year-round interest, attracts birds and pollinators, and functions as a drainage solution, efficiently diverting enormous amounts of runoff away from the home where it had previously pooled after rain showers and spring snowmelts.

The garden isn't completely lawn-free. It hosts an IdealMow lawn of native Dune Sedge. It thrives with no chemical fertilizers or pesticides and uses only 20 percent of the water required by a turf grass lawn. A "smart" subsurface, hydrozoned drip irrigation system on weather based controllers delivers exactly what the hydrozoned foliage needs, right to its roots. This aids foliage health and eliminates water loss to evaporation.
To keep its lawn-like appearance, the grass needs mowing only a few times a year. If left to grow, it forms true-green waves.

Just installed living wall/vertical garden. This large living wall was the perfect solution to bring life to the home's front wall just next to the entrance. A variety of succulents, grass-like plants and cascading plants with flowers were chosen, designed and planted in long "waves" offering a variety of textures and colors. Just completed in Sept. 2019. See more recent photos in this album.

Rather than covering up the cream brick of this 1950's house, the client wanted to celebrate it with a garden of strong forms, and bright contrasting colours. Drought tolerant and low maintenance. Here we have Aloe 'Topaz' again, the hero of the winter garden.
