N Sabella IncThe existing irregularly shaped staircase was previously carpeted. No single tread was the same size or shape as another. Templates were made and quartersawn white oak boards were first ripped down to pie shaped blanks to form the glue-up slabs for each of the 13 -14 treads. Glued and biscuited for extra strength. Note the extra touches at the top 3 treads where the return pieces are sharply curved.
Century Stair CompanyThis versatile staircase doubles as seating, allowing home owners and guests to congregate by a modern wine cellar and bar. Oak steps with high risers were incorporated by the architect into this beautiful stair to one side of the thoroughfare; a riser-less staircase above allows natural lighting to create a fabulous focal point. StairworksThe client’s goal of this project was for Stairworks to produce a centrepiece staircase that kept with the rustic, ‘imperfect’ aesthetic of the home and appear as if it had always been there. This was quite the challenge as it takes a great deal of work to build a brand new staircase that is accurate but not flawless. However, this challenge made this a very enjoyable project to work on.
For the chunky timber, we hand selected 100mm oiled Macrocarpa with splits and knots that are normally rejected for use on new furniture, and both machined and fitted it on site. In addition, ‘working’ marks in the steel were left exposed and sometimes even added in certain places to achieve the client’s desired look.
Bishop WoodcraftEach detail in this stairway in a home in Park City is a prime example of dressing up a typically boring straight switch back staircase. We started with Hickory treads and risers and added a housed stringer. Then a stunning custom two-piece Hickory handrail sits atop the railing with the balusters at each end piercing the lower handrail, all to create visual appeal. Add to that the illusion of the tread ends piercing through the stringers and in turn being pierced by the 1" solid steel balusters and you hold people's attention to the point that they forget that they were even climbing a stair. Now that's the way to travel!
Jack VanderBie Builder, LLCThere is tongue and groove paneling through out the home. The hand railing is bronze metal to tie all of the hardware together for a cohesive look. The pendant light casts great shadows on the walls and ceilings.
