The arbor is constructed of Glu-Lam beams with galvanized steel caps to protect the wood from water. the arbor is also attached to the masonry columns with galvanized steel connectors. This image is taken from inside the common courtyard, located between the two houses, looking back to the Hannon residence. Photography by Lucas Henning.

Ricardo is passionate about sustainable forestry. He specialises in renewable energy using natural systems in nature and we have created an environment that reflects this within his home. In this project we chose paintings that express fluidity and fengshui to embrace the wind and water elements of nature. To purify the air, we created a moss wall and the lush grass carpet generates the comforting sense of forest bathing. The splashback evokes the peaceful experience of walking in the forest amongst a sea of bluebells generating a sense of spring and new beginings. The bathroom is inspired by the vast, lush Amazon Rainforest and it's natural biodiversity. With the artwork here, we created an alluring tranquil space, incorporating natural raw materials and spiritual artefacts, brining a sense of calm and rejuvenation.

The owners of this charming Spanish-style home wanted an oasis in their small backyard. In just 1,400 square feet, not only did we give them a pool and spa, but also an inviting area for lounging and eating, created from repurposed vintage brick. Their love of Mexican design is seen in a new Talavera-tiled outdoor shower area. Softly billowing California native plants mingle with a growing collection of cacti and succulents.

This property has a wonderful juxtaposition of modern and traditional elements, which are unified by a natural planting scheme. Although the house is traditional, the client desired some contemporary elements, enabling us to introduce rusted steel fences and arbors, black granite for the barbeque counter, and black African slate for the main terrace. An existing brick retaining wall was saved and forms the backdrop for a long fountain with two stone water sources. Almost an acre in size, the property has several destinations. A winding set of steps takes the visitor up the hill to a redwood hot tub, set in a deck amongst walls and stone pillars, overlooking the property. Another winding path takes the visitor to the arbor at the end of the property, furnished with Emu chaises, with relaxing views back to the house, and easy access to the adjacent vegetable garden.

An existing home on Hunts Point was in need of a landscape renovation. Project Groundwork transformed the existing, uneven and small pool terrace from “afterthought” to an expansive outdoor amenity oasis with a built in gas firepit, ipe deck on a single level, and included a new privacy fence, raised corten steel planters and dramatic lighting. A new side garden with play lawn for the kids included raised cedar planting beds, crushed granite steel edged walkways, lighting and thoughtful planting.
