Project 3408-1 Scandinavian Kitchen Remodel w/ Custom Island on Wheels
Castle Building & RemodelingCastle Building & Remodeling
This 1901-built bungalow in the Longfellow neighborhood of South Minneapolis was ready for a new functional kitchen. The homeowners love Scandinavian design, so the new space melds the bungalow home with Scandinavian design influences. A wall was removed between the existing kitchen and old breakfast nook for an expanded kitchen footprint. Marmoleum modular tile floor was installed in a custom pattern, as well as new windows throughout. New Crystal Cabinetry natural alder cabinets pair nicely with the Cambria quartz countertops in the Torquay design, and the new simple stacked ceramic backsplash. All new electrical and LED lighting throughout, along with windows on three walls create a wonderfully bright space. Sleek, stainless steel appliances were installed, including a Bosch induction cooktop. Storage components were included, like custom cabinet pull-outs, corner cabinet pull-out, spice racks, and floating shelves. One of our favorite features is the movable island on wheels that can be placed in the center of the room for serving and prep, OR it can pocket next to the southwest window for a cozy eat-in space to enjoy coffee and tea. Overall, the new space is simple, clean and cheerful. Minimal clean lines and natural materials are great in a Minnesotan home. Designed by: Emily Blonigen. U-Shaped Apartment Kitchen in Manhattan
U-Shaped Apartment Kitchen in Manhattan
SieMatic New YorkSieMatic New York
This small galley kitchen in Manhattan needed an efficient layout, and clean lines and materials that created more visual space. Kitchen designer Robert Dobbs put together a modern design including upper cabinets in Titan Pine wood grain laminate and base cabinets in a warm, neutral yet dramatic high gloss truffle grey for clients who wanted "not another white kitchen!" Floating corner shelves with LED lighting add to the sense of space and provide task lighting. The vent hood's glass canopy helps it disappear. Upper cabinets include bifold doors that open up and make the ceiling look higher. Thin countertops and handle-free base cabinets continue the simple, horizontal and clean, linear design. Empty nesters decided to remodel their home instead of moving. We were happy to work with them to complete a whole house remodel, which included renovating the entire exterior, energy upgrades throughout, a new kitchen, updated fireplace, living room, dining room, and main staircase. The heart of the home is the beautiful new kitchen featuring natural hickory cabinets with a modern flat front door that allows the texture and grain of the wood to shine. Special features include floating shelves flanking the kitchen sink, window trim that matches the cabinets, wrought iron balusters, and lighting with an industrial edge.

Bakes & Kropp's Cucina BK style custom cabinetry is fresh, contemporary and coastal in this "Oceanview Oasis" Kitchen. The vertical grain orientation of the Rift White Oak draws the eye skyward and the light wash finish treatment gives it a loose, beach-inspired texture. A U-shaped configuration showcases the room's natural light by keeping the large glass window the focal point and utilizing an open upper peninsula unit. The center island, topped in brushed stainless, softly reflects the light and the subtle aqua marine color scheme. The space is truly modern cottage living at its finest! • Lead design by Bakes & Kropp's Guillaume Dupre

A talented interior designer was ready for a complete redo of her 1980s style kitchen in Chappaqua. Although very spacious, she was looking for better storage and flow in the kitchen, so a smaller island with greater clearances were desired. Grey glazed cabinetry island balances the warm-toned cerused white oak perimeter cabinetry. White macauba countertops create a harmonious color palette while the decorative backsplash behind the range adds both pattern and texture. Kitchen design and custom cabinetry by Studio Dearborn. We chose cabinetry made from reclaimed barnwood from Country Roads Associates (in Holmes, NY) as well as a copper farmhouse sink to get the farmhouse feel. Adding the brick wall and reclaimed 2" thick barnwood beam shelving further enhanced the rustic nature of the design. The Caspian blue glass tile by Akdo Tile, stainless steel appliances (Viking, Bosch, Liebherrr, Thermador) and thin Dekton (by Cosentino) counter tops lend the contemporary touch. Hafele hardware and interior cabinet lighting also adds a contemporary touch along with the Blum Aventos lift-systems (automatic cabinet doors). Photo by Chris Sanders

What this Mid-century modern home originally lacked in kitchen appeal it made up for in overall style and unique architectural home appeal. That appeal which reflects back to the turn of the century modernism movement was the driving force for this sleek yet simplistic kitchen design and remodel. Stainless steel aplliances, cabinetry hardware, counter tops and sink/faucet fixtures; removed wall and added peninsula with casual seating; custom cabinetry - horizontal oriented grain with quarter sawn red oak veneer - flat slab - full overlay doors; full height kitchen cabinets; glass tile - installed countertop to ceiling; floating wood shelving; Karli Moore Photography
