Hallway lighting options

special morning

I would love some opinions on my choices for lighting the hallway and landing. First picture is the fittings I have available and I like all of them.

Second pic shows the very high up light I want to change, preferably to a long fitting which dangles further down. So that would be the wicker one, or one of the globes.

Third pic is standing back a bit and showing a light further along the landing corridor. There's a right angle and another light exactly the same round the corner behind where I'm standing.

Fourth pic is the current wall lights, there's another one the same on the stairwell down. These are brassier and more traditional, and I'm not sure I like the 'up' effect, so I have the two tube shaped ones as an option.

I will put down a lovely multicolour stripe rug as a runner down the hall for some lovely colour. My question is, do the fittings all look ok together? In what combination should I use them? Do I need to change the wall lights in your opinion?

I think all the fittings complement each other except the wall lights .... I would change them to something that fits with your new choices :-)

Susanna, I find the wicker shade a bit old fashion and just not glam enough for your hall (which is gorgeous). The Moroccan lamps are somewhat better, just be aware they are part of a trend that will probably look dated in a couple of years.

Personally, I'd get rid of those wall lights - they are not doing much for the space (and look like these ones from B&Q http://www.diy.com/departments/colours-vas-antique-brass-effect-2-candle-single-wall-light/258065_BQ.prd). If you'd rather keep them, you could spray-paint them, either in black/white or a grey-silver colour.

However, unless you have budget constrains, I'd go for something else entirely; either traditional or modern, you can find lots of cool lights for your space. (I listed a few below, different styles for all budgets).

    Thank you Luciana.

I definitely want to get rid of the wall lights, and had decided to replace with the tube shaped moroccan ones. I would like to be glam..... but the its a Victorian villa, and the rest of the house is definitely country house style. There are traditional elements, and (I hope) one or two funky bits.

Its so hard to know how things will look before they are up, and in these cases, as I need a sparky to fit them, it will be expensive all round if I hate it!

The metal ones are beautiful but have you seen them on? Does the light come through the pierced metal on the metal lights? Will they give you enough light?
And with the wicker one - do you end up looking at the bare bulb? Remember at that height you won't be looking at it from the angle you have photographed it.
If the metal lights don't give out enough light and you want something classically modern and elegant Flos do an excellent range of wall lights.

Thanks Philchales. We had the lights lit up for us in Marrakesh, but I'm sure they'll look different here. We have 2 small children, so I think they will be fun......

It will be quite rare you would look up to the bulb of the wicker one. You'll see it from above when coming down from the attic, but not really from below.

The Moroccan shades are lovely (wall and ceiling) and will look great. I agree with the other poster that the wicker shade may just be a little too plain in a hall that is already rather light, but I still think it would work. Moroccan shades have been in John Lewis for at least 4 or so years so there's no sign of them going out of fashion. Anyway, the Morroccan / bohemian look will always have a place and if you like them then I say go for it. :o)

Thanks dizzybizzy. I was thinking of painting the inside of the light, as I've seen a pic on pinterest of a wicker lamp painted red inside. It looks amazing. But I would maybe worry about the paint getting through if only doing one side..... What do you think?

Wow, look at this. I wonder if I could get a glitter spray paint or even stick lots and lots of glitter to the inside of the wicker lampshade.

Maybe it would look better in a plain bright colour to match the striped rug?

lovely ideas. From spray painting wicker furniture in the past it is very difficult to keep the paint to the one side. Good luck with whatever you choose x

What about adapting them in a chandelier fashion? A reputable electrician would be able to advise re requirements. Also the cylindrical ones could be adapted for the wall.

Hi twinks76 - I am not sure what you mean about the chandelier fashion? Do you mean adapt the two globes?

I suppose I meant to hang them at various lengths, as pendants. From one fixture, your stairway looks as if it has the height to carry it off?? Hope thats clearer.
