Is there a rule of thumb about size of island vs size of sink?

I'm renovation our kitchen and planning a 3'2"x 7' island with 12" overhang for seating along the one short side and one long side( away for main counter). I need advice re sink placement/size so I have uninterrupted space for preparing (ie rolling pastry) but so sink isn't too close to place settings when eating.

I would say the closest the sink should be from the front is 3" and the closest it should be from the side is 4". This is all to make sure there is enough support in the counter top material and the cabinets below.
