(A) Fireplace has to go there by virtue of nowhere else is suitable. It also warms the air from where it is coldest - the window, before it hits those seated on the sofa.

(B) Having a glowing fire between the world and you at night precludes illuminating you. The fireplace acts as a lightsource maintaining your privacy (to a degree) by silhouette. This is understood by the designer as he/she placed two lights between the glass window and the sofa. When switched on viewers through the glass window see less of you.
