I've never been to Canada, but I think it'd be nice there. It's not busy, but attractive and quiet.
If it were to be in the UK, I'd go for an island; either the Scillies or a Scottish Isle.

How could I choose, there are so many places left to explore. I am always the one taking you to the airport or bringing you home, so I have only been to seattle and up the coast as far as maine once. Out of the country - Canada for 2 days and Bahamas, oh yes and in international waters many times, in the not so large family boat. lol

Exactly where we have one - in the foothills of the Italian Maritime Alps, above the narrow stretch of the riviera coastline in North West Italy - just over the border from the South of France.

The house needs a shed load of work doing to it, and it's a bit of a money pit; but it has a large terrace, lots of fruit trees, an outdoor kitchen and plenty of sunshine. No regrets.

West coast of France...a little stone house with wooden shutters, in a sleepy village near the beach....

    where is Filey?

  • wendy Anderson

Filey is on the East coast of Yorkshire in the UK. Maybe far less exotic and glamorous than many places mentioned here but it's the most calming place I know. And control freaks like me don't calm easily!

Havingfun- oh if you get the chance go to Dingle. It's on the Slea Head Peninsula and it is breathtaking. Dingle is both a tourist town but also a regular town. Has most tourist amenities but it isn't gaudy. Lovely people too.

Dingle. Or An Daingean. Or even Daingean Uí Chúis. All the same place. Big hoo-haa over name change .. Was to be renamed as Gaelige as its in a Gaelteacht area - but then a bun-fight over what was the correct name in Irish. Then many businesses wanted it to stay as Dingle as it was considered a 'Brand'. So sort of referred to all 3 names at once. Blasket Islands are worth a whirl too - but wouldn't recommend as a place for holiday home!

Folks, I live near, so don't need a holiday home, but I recommend the ninety mile beach in Victoria, Australia.

I live on the West Coast of Clare - so not sure why I would want a holiday home in Dingle - There is just as much around here .... I suppose I should just open my eyes more! Being able to see the great Atlantic Ocean with Mutton Island in view is very grounding. Often remind my kids that they won't see such a wonderful view when they've shipped out to London, Dublin, New York .... or wherever they land. Just concrete buildings + dual carriageways. They roll their eyes.....

Milford, my ancestors came from co Clare. That explains why my kid rolls her eyes, it's indigenous to your area. And here I was thinking it was me being uncool!

Chook- d'white of d'eye is another common manoeuvre that West Clare women have skilfully mastered. It's that withering sideways look which shows a myriad of emotion - usually disdain, often displeasure or anger and often means 'shut up'! My mother was In the Premier Division. "What did Mum say about going to disco?". "Nothing. I got d'white of d'eye!' .....

Being from Scotland I'd like somewhere isolated on the coast somewhere rural for a quick getaway. Preferably with a beach.

Chock - that's the modern-day bean de iarthar an Chláir (woman of west Clare) look that is mastered just after the tooth fairy leaves their world ! It's a temporary affliction that disappears once they achieve independence from the patents.
Yes I got going to all the discos, dances, hops, most everywhere really - but on Mums terms! If I thought I needed £15 for the night out, she would say £10 was plenty. If I wanted to come home when I wanted, I was given a time to be home by. If I thought it was safe enough to wander around late at night on my own, my brothers were sent to escort me ....
D"White of d"eye in my case was a warning to me to behave, stop being smart + running my mouth especially if I wanted to get going some-place. It worked!

Shoes? My mother loved fashion + I was an only daughter with brothers for nearly 10 yrs. Mum loved nothing better than taking me out + dressing me. Shoes - oh wow she had fabulous taste. My favourite pair were a deep red suede pair of low court shoes perfect for dancing in + so eye-catching.

Too many options to choose from but would be near a beach without surf (too tiring fighting the waves), lots of greenery and near enough to some civilization to get yummy food and meet some interesting people, The south of Italy, may be Puglia would be great, down to earth and friendly with fab food and swimming (although not so green).

A small house (or flat if I had to) with a view on a harbour beach in Sydney, Australia where I can just pop out for a swim every morning and with a great place outside for sharing the scenery and entertaining friends and family! The first view below on the south side of the harbour looking north would be my strong first choice but could also cope with one of the others on the north side.

LUNDY ISLAND in the Bristol Channel, with the British Virgin Islands runner up. Chalk and cheese I know, but Lundy is soooo gorgeous, though it would never be allowed by the Landmark Trust who own it.

Kalami in North East Corfu. Beautiful clear blue sea, bleached pebble beach dotted with driftwood overlooked by hills lined with ancient olive and pine trees. A couple of fabulous tavernas on the beach and a water taxi every evening to take you to one of the superb tavernas on the beach (literally) on Agni bay or Agios Stefanos. Grilled calamari, octopus stifado or king crab linguini eaten on a jetty overlooking the bay and the fishing boats - accompanied by a glass of excellent Corfiot wine. No large hotels, nightclubs or English pubs. Unspoilt just like the Greek islands used to be!
