Roman Shades--two layer

These are beautiful! Which fabric is providing the square pattern? Should the front fabric be the one to do that? Thank you any advice you can provide.

    The front layer is the fabric that had embroidered motifs, the backing was a sheer white batiste used as lining. I believe the front fabric is called Four Square, by Robert Allen.
