Help with living room fireplace

What color of rock should I use to make my living room fireplace if the wall that it is on is going to be painted a Merlot red or light brown? The opposite wall will either be Merlot red accent or light brown should the rock color be white, or should I use red bricks, or should I use natural stones that have a brownish color?
