I am looking for an idea other than beadboard for my wall under our kitchen bar-My 2 boys sit here all the time & there are shoe marks, etc left there-- any ideas?
You could use paint grade plywood and create trim panels with 1x4/6 material so you have the durability of wood but finish and style of the cabinet. If you cabinets are not painted you could also use stain grade material and stain to match.
Depending on the style of your kitchen you could use glass tile with a wood base at the bottom. Send a picture of the condition and it will be easier to give you pointers.
I personally think nellerose's idea is brilliant, but if that isn't your style, another alternative is tadelakt (a special very hard plaster that was developed for use in moroccan bathhouses etc.)
Vinyl wallcovering is also really great and easily cleaned/wipeable - comes in arrary of colors, textures, patterns (often used in commercial interior design.) Durable and cleanable.
