    If it help with shelving you are seeking, one way to relatively simply build a solution (even by a competent DIYer) and will accommodate many books is to use primed MDF window boards, as per the example below. There profile include a recess ideal for a concealed batten but the majority of the strength is through the vertical uprights (in this example spaced in a brick-bond fashion and of differing heights to allow for the books/box files etc.).

    Hi Deborah. Sounds like a great project. Could you give a bit info and post a pic and dimensions of the room? Are you wanting a library in keeping with the period of the house using Edwardian colours or something different? You don't have an ideabook set up so it's hard to make suggestions
