Reno on a Budget

We bought a 1979 house on 2.5 lovely acres knowing we needed to redo the hot mess of a 90's poorly reno'd kitchen. We worked with a small biz contractor and did a lot of the work ourselves. It was a bumpy ride that entailed washing dishes in our master bathroom for months (as we also reno'd the first floor bath to push the fridge into), but we are very happy. Hoping to inspire those on a tight budget to keep at it. We spent hours price comparing options and working to get a quality product for a reasonable price. Totally worth it as it is the hub of our home now!

View of the labrynth that was our garage entry...

And how it works for us now (we demo'd that ridiculous red wall to open up to our dining room)...

We moved the fridge to this wasted space (where the white dresser sat) that was too small to fit a table for four...

To this...

Only one person could fit at the sink...

Now our family of four can all help prep for a meal...

Thanks for looking!!!!

Great use of the space. That old kitchen must have driven you crazy.....doors opening into the oven, your old fridge was like an offensive lineman, blocking anyone that tried to enter. Good job.

great work; have you considered changing the door that I suspect leads to the garage? something a little more special.

Joni...yes...that door has seen better days! We had to draw a line in the sand with cost, but that is on our list of upgrades. I would like, at minimum to change it out to a paneled door. I also thought of adding a color to there. Any suggestions?

Google DIY Panel Doors. I have cheap hollow core doors that I will be doing some type of DIY panels on. Here is an example of what can be done

Looks absolutely amazing!!! Congrats!! My husband and I will be in a similar situation as we just bought a home built in '87! How did you find your small business contractor!?

Mariah...we interviewed about 5 contractors. Some were full-service home remodeling companies with their own design team, showrooms, etc. They were out of our budget ($50-$70K was their estimates), and I didn't like the idea of a large crew of workers in our house while we were still living in it (especially with my kids home all day in summer). I interviewed a talented kitchen designer who sold high end cabinets and worked with her own contractors. We loved her design but couldn't afford her high end cabinets. She graciously sold us her desgin which we then replicated with a big-box store kitchen designer who found us quality but affordable cabinets. They had independent contractors they recommended for kitchen install...and that is where we met ours. We liked that he did all of the work himself along with a carpenter and apprentice. His wife did all the wall finishing, painting and detail work (women are MUCH better at having a nice finishing touch). He gave us labor discounts whenever me or my hubby worked on a part of the project also. Downside was it took a long time! Bonus was we felt comfortable with these people in our house all summer. We also used Prosource for discount products and even Amazon. We saved a lot doing it this way...but it is not for a faint of heart, lol!
