Alcoves..... put in shelving and cupboards or not?????

We are about to decorate our large living room. In total it's 8m long with 4 alcoves. (It was originally two rooms years ago before we moved in) I'm in two minds whether to put traditional style inbuilt shelves and cupboards in some or all of the alcoves. What are the pros and cons? Thanks!

No cons about having a little extra storage space or a nice place to show off bits and bobs. How about a cocktail cabinet? Or nice antique cabinet, artwork, statement lamp etc.

Hi Ruth, it all depends on what you need. If you are not too desperate for extra storate, then keep the look light an airy and install just shelving. But don't put in two many shelves, that might look busy. You could also paint the back of the alcove in a darker shade than the rest of the walls, to give it more depth.

Make sure you have symmetrical shelving on both sides of the fire place.

BTW, I love the arched shaped alcoves, they look stunning!

Here are some photos for inspiration.
