I've typically seen this grow into a pyramidal "clumped" shape. How did you get it to grow in more of a cylindrical spire shape?

There are SO many hinoiki cypresses! This specific one is Chamaecyparis obtusa 'Gracilis' (not gracilis nana). It's often called "Slender Hinoiki False Cypress". It is extremely slow growing ultimately reaching 8-15' tall which is "dwarf" compared to the straight species which can get 50' tall. Some references call this one a semi-dwarf since there are many hinoiki that remain much smaller.
