Need to finalize curtain (motorized) for large window

Our master bedroom has a large door/window with beautiful views outside. We decided to have a motorized curtain for convenience and also for decorative purpose. This is the best feature of our house and the only thing that husband really cares. He wants complete blackout because he cannot sleep well if there is light.

Dimensions:

Window: 144"

Wall-to-wall - 230"

After multiple discussions, we decided to go for wall-to-wall curtain.

The curtain is being made by a workroom quite far from where I am. I've just placed an order for the curtain track, motor etc with a local window company with wall-to-wall dimensions. But, told them to hold off on ordering the curtain track just so I can I confirm the width one more time.

Here is my dilemma with different options:

Option 1: If I go wall-to-wall, the curtain stacks on the wall to the sides, but exposes around 10" of wall on either side of the window when open. Will this look odd? The curtain fabric is plain, almost the same color as the wall. The material is linen, poly blend with blackout lining.

Option 2: Have the rod width that equals: window length + stackback on either side. Once the curtain is actually done, there is a potential that the window might be covered a little (which we don't want). In this option, the wall will be exposed outside of the curtain.

Option 3: Go wall-to-wall, but have additional pleats at the end that will stay stacked stationary, just to avoid blank wall space next to the window.

Both the curtain workroom and the hardware company are really good and I feel very comfortable with them.

This whole thing costs $$$$, and I'm worried about making wrong choice. Which is a better option? Am I missing anything else?

Please share your thoughts.

Thanks a lot.

How can the workroom make the curtain with knowing which rod you will be using?

Can't you go with option 1 and not fully open them, so that there is no wall exposed? If not, go with option 3.

Out of curiosity, why motorized? It must be quite a bit more expensive. You could simply use a center open traverse rod, with a manual pulley on one side. My parents have had one covering their large bedroom window for 55 years and it still works perfectly. You can get decorative ones too if you don't like the look of the plain rod.

Remember, there will be light leak above the drapery unless you do it all the way to the ceiling or do a cornice over drape.

I would recommend wall-to-wall. However, these are options you need to discuss with your drapery workroom. Correct measurements are vital to avoid making costly mistakes.

Thank you all for your input. I got a hold of the motor specialist, and was told that they can program the motor to stop where we want it to stop. So, we will go with option 1.

Partim: motorization is quite expensive, especially since this window is large. But husband has always wanted it. We enjoy the views a lot from the bed. The convenience of it and the need for blackout made us go for it.

I have a client who wants the same thing and their windows are about the same width. Would you mind sharing what company you used for the motorized rod and if you've been happy with it? Thanks much!

You need less drapery from the window center to the left wall than you do from the window center to the right wall, and if you drape the whole wall, your drape stacks will not match. If you have the drapes the same size for each half of the window, the right side leaves a narrow space of wall showing. Can you hang an interesting item in that open space so it doesn't feel empty? Having the drapery stack width the same on both sides would be my preference.

We are also going with motorized rods in our great room. Found some suppliers online but curious as to where you are getting your rods. We are looking for dual rods so we can have sheers plus a 2nd curtain for room darkening.
