No usually you can overhang 10-12 inches without support, depending on the slab. If it were deemed necessary to support it then I would use metal and also the slab fabricator can reinforce the slab by recessing metal strips in slots within the actual slab. This island has cabinets on the backside so corbels or L brackets would be an issue we would have to work around.
