Why the wood floor boards?

I will be redoing my bathroom and I love the look of the wood planks outside the shower. Do they serve a purpose? What's under them? Thanks!

Hi Linda, It is a wood mat constructed like deck. Being just outside the shower, it's a place to dry off, have a place to sit, use lotions, relax. The natural wood give it a spa like quality. The mat lifts out for cleaning if needed, the inside of the opening is tiled.
