Is it safe for walkways and garden walls to have palm trees next to them? Will the pressure of the growth of the tree cause hardscape to buckle and crack? Any help on this is appreciated. Beautiful and elegant work.
Thank you for contacting ArtisTree. Particular preparation and careful installation are key in preventing buckling and cracking of hardscapes. In this design, a deep foundation of nutrient-rich soil was laid underneath six inches of concrete slab with large hole cut for the palm root balls to grow and breathe. The travertine was applied to the top of the concrete slab. To date (this installation was a few years ago), the palms are healthy and the hardscape has not been damaged due to pressure or growth.
The owner entertains beneath the palms quite frequently and has not reported any issues. Therefore, with the correct preparation, we feel it is safe.
