We are trying to figure out if an island that is 8 ft long x 2.5 ft deep will work or if that is too narrow. We can't make it wider because our kitchen isn't wide enough.
The island base cabinets are 3’-0” deep x 9’-8” wide. The countertop overhang is approximately 1 inch on all sides. Therefore, the total countertop dimension is 3’-2” x 9’-10”.
I have seen islands with base cabinets as narrow as 24” designed as a successful use of space. I would go for it, if I were you.
One thing to consider is clear dimensions for your aisles between the island and adjacent spaces. I recommend you try to maintain at least 42 inches clear space in front of appliances.
I hope this helps.
