does the mat keep sand and grit from falling through, as promised?

I live in MN with lots of snirt (snow and dirty gravel) that gets tracked in from the garage. We have beautiful cherry floors at the entry hallways of our new house. Tile would be better at hall entries in MN. Any suggestions for rugs/mats that solve this problem?

Unfortunately this pad cannot handle moderate amounts of moisture. It will catch and stop dirt / debris from getting to the floor but it is not intended to be a moisture barrier.
