Temporary or enclosed space?

Hi, is the new space/bedroom on the mezzanine classed as a temporary fixture through use of remove-able shutters i.e. still open plan to the floor below. Or, is this classed as an enclosed space and if so assuming it has an alternative escape route etc? We are currently trying to find a 'work around' with our mezzanine renovation to ensure it is compliant with building control but are struggling to convert to a private bedroom. Any suggestions and ideas welcome! Thank you, Alexandra

Hi Alex, It will depend on what country you are in and what your building regulations are. This project is in New Zealand and we had to prove that we have the right amount of natural light and ventilation, which was 'borrowed' from the adjacent spaces. There was a compliant stair to the space too. You'd be best to talk to a local architect for advice. Best wishes with your project.
