Should you paint your natural wood beams?

I have dark wood beams throughout the major rooms (Living room, Dining room, Kitchen, Family room and Master Bedroom. I am constantly told that I should paint them off color as my ceilings. As I look at photos on Houzz, I see nothing but natural wood beams, not painted. What should I do?

    It really depends on the style and architure of your home. This was a new built, by the beach, so a light airy feel was desired by our client.
