Excuse my naivete but did you need to get a permit to add this window to home? -- is it similar to "bumping" out a room which I read can be very expensive.

I jealous, I wish my house came with such a window the superior craftsmanship is obvious.

usually anything that changes your home's footprint will require a permit. The change will show up on a survey when you go to sell your home.

If you cantilever the window, it doesn't affect the footprint. Atlanta has a price point of $2,500 to require a permit. If you built it yourself, this might come under that and require no permit. All localities differ.

In Chicago, if you change the natural light and vent of a room (larger or smaller operable or inoperable windows) you are technically required to pull a permit. However, as justlookin noted, every municipality's regulations are different regarding permit requirements. The cost would be completely dependent on your existing conditions and what you actually can and want to achieve.
