Chiltern Garden Design were approached to create a new planting design to completely transform this internal courtyard space at Amersham Hospital. Using a lush palette of textural and coloured foliage plants, we brought to life this mostly shady space, and created a haven for the nurses and staff to relax and get time away from their busy NHS jobs, as well as a haven for wildlife.

This London courtyard garden, designed by Luxury Gardens, balances architectural form with natural softness. Limestone paving, layered greenery, and structured planting create a calm, inviting space that flows effortlessly from the interior kitchen to the outdoor terrace. The scheme embraces a modern city lifestyle, elegant, timeless, and full of texture, with carefully curated materials and planting to enhance privacy and year-round appeal.

The Wisteria was leaning and completely entwined with an old obelisk, so rather than cutting it out and starting again we pruned carefully, keeping some long stems, then supported the plant - obelisk and all - against the new curved arbour. This photo was taken the first spring after the garden was completed. Wisteria is perfect for growing over an arbour so that you can look up at it, and the scent is held within the space.

A water Japanese water bowl "tsukubai" collects water from a "Kusari-doi" or rain chain. The beauty of the Kusari-doi is that it gathers water from the roof and conveys it to the ground, and does so artistically, transforming a dull, enclosed downspout into a visual and auditory delight.

Remodelling the garden to incorporate different levels allowed us to create a living wall of steps, creating the illusion of depth from inside the house

This Garden was designed by Michael Cooke Garden Design. Effective courtyard garden is about keeping the design of the courtyard simple. Small courtyard gardens such as this coastal garden in Clovelly are about keeping the design simple. The swimming pool is tiled internally with a really dark mosaic tile which contrasts nicely with the sandstone coping around the pool. The cabana is a cool mixture of free form concrete, Spotted Gum vertical slats and a lined ceiling roof. The flooring is also Spotted Gum to tie in with the slats. Photos by Natalie Hunfalvay
