Minibar. The minibar takes the couple’s entertaining abilities to the next level, designer Karen Nepacena says. And because it’s such an important part of the remodeled kitchen, she wanted to make it pop. “Tile is one of my favorite materials to make a space unique,” she says. She knew the clients didn’t fear the bold, so she chose this handmade pattern that meshed well with the old-feel tone of the rest of the house. They had considered using more of the tile, but in the end, limiting the tile usage saved money and made the minibar stand out.Pro tip: This tile is not for someone in a rush, because each piece is made by hand, Nepacena says. The tile took six weeks to be made and a couple of days to be installed. “It takes a lot of trial and error to make these tiles fit seamlessly,” she says, because each piece is unique. But if it works with your timeline and you like it, it may be worth the effort.Tile: Kasbah Trellis, Fireclay Tile; cabinet hardware: Bowman, Rejuvenation

Island. “Given that we were a bit limited with wall space for large appliances, we worked a set of freezer drawers into the island, across from the full-sized Sub-Zero refrigerator column,” designer Emily Karempelis says. “This prevented us from having to step up the overall width of a refrigerator-freezer combination unit.” There’s also a microwave drawer, placed in the island to keep the look of the kitchen streamlined and to have it near the pantry and refrigerator. Other special features. Recessed appliances that sit flush with cabinets. Wall-mounted sconces over the sink. Walk-in pantry. Reclaimed-barn-wood accent on range hood. Designer secret. “As a designer, I am always looking to create balance and symmetry,” Karempelis says. “In this case, we were a bit landlocked, and recessing the appliances into the wall threw off the centerline of the island and the kitchen sink. Instead of drawing attention to this by adding pendant lights over the island, we instead kept can lighting in the kitchen and used some fun wall-mounted sconces over the kitchen window to draw your eyes through the kitchen space while also providing additional lighting for one of the main working surfaces in...

19. Vintage lighting. Pros are reporting more interest in vintage-style fixtures, such as aged copper pendant lights. “There’s a huge focus on lighting right now, especially vintage pieces, which is also considered to be a great art solution,” Simard says.Browse copper pendant lights
