If nothing else, at least a prep sink. I'm thinking the island could be pretty long, with the sink or stove nearer the present sink and seating at the other end.

dm - spice cabinets near stove are convenient SY: yes. Here again, stove in island. Thoughts about that? dm - see previous - either sink or stove in island would be fine. I think I'd like a pop up vent better than a large vent in the center of the room.

dm - like clean lines SY: I do too, but this modern seems incongruous with the rest of the house. May need to tone it back a bit. We didn't talk about the columns leading into your dining area but those are a particularly traditional element. dm - The builder put in the columns to imitate the front porch columns. Since we took out the wood flooring, they are just floating - could stay or go. (We were thinking of using the same type of column on the portico if we keep the kitchen door just to tie things together.) We are in no way emotionally attached to them. Putting wood flooring throughout, it might be better to remove the columns and really open up the space.

dm - like colors SY: yes, me too. dm - could be my monitor but the uppers appear to be darker than the lowers. You asked about "dark stain" on one of your posts; in this case I'd say darker paint is better.
