If you own an old, historic home that needs to be painted, Ken Roginski (aka Old House Guy) is a gem of a consultant. His website alone, with its many photographs of homes painted to his specifications, reveals exceptional beauty and the depth of knowledge necessary to achieve it. I soon realized when I was thinking about how to paint my home that I was way out of my depth and needed help. The color combinations for my house rendered by Ken followed rules for pillars, corbels, window sashes and trim, newel posts and rails and pickets, moldings, the old pass window for the ice man, gutters, and more. Ken even provides archival catalogues with historic color collections to acquaint you with colors popular in the era during which your house was built. His blog contains a wealth of information about historic home renovation. He is wonderful about answering all the questions bound to arise in a project as large and complicated as painting and restoring a historic house, including questions about what to do about the sides of your gabled windows or how to recreate missing moldings or where to go to find crestings for your widow's walk or car port. Ken was very professional and extremely helpful. Excellent communication with prompt replies to emails and available for phone conversations, something all too uncommon these days. We wouldn't have been able to pick such perfect colors for our house without Ken's help. If you value the appearance of your house and want it to look correct then Ken is your guy.

I contracted with Old House Guy to do a color rendering of my old Victorian home and carriage house. Ken clearly is an expert in his field but, equally important, is easy to work with. His number one priority is to honor the home and to help you bring it back to its glory. He is patient with those of us not as knowledgeable and aims to educate you throughout the process. No question is stupid and he always has time for you. He works with you to understand your color preferences but keeps you within the period of the home. I can't tell you how many times I reached out to Ken with questions! He is truly a pleasure to work with and this has been the best money I have spent on this house. Not only was the expertise much needed (after all- we aren’t experts on Victorian painting), but the results were excellent! Ken was so easy to work with and really knows his stuff. From his first email responding to our request for services, to his last email making sure we were comfortable with the tested colors and final color placements, Ken made the process a breeze. For example, he recommended we remove architecturally incorrect features of our home (some bad shutters and very clunky screened in front porch framing) prior to rendering our colors. Ken at the OldHouseGuy was instrumental in selecting the best color scheme and correct color placement when I decided to paint my 1890 Victorian home. There was a very tight timeline in making these decisions since the start of the paint project was imminent. Ken provided renderings for the House based on my initial color preferences, and then we incrementally narrowed down the color scheme via daily email exchanges. Without his expert guidance I would have made wrong decisions. The paint contractor used the high resolution final rendering image to correctly place the color accents when adding the final touches. I was able to ask Ken other questions related to the exterior house renovation, and I always got a prompt expert response. I learned a lot in the process. The money spent on his consultation / rendering fee was a very worthwhile investment.

Ken was great! He had so many great tips and was detailed in his explanations even over the phone, plus he sent over documents and links to help with visuals. HIGHLY RECOMMEND!

I was a little skeptical at first but really needed help figuring out paint choices. But I think ultimately the money invested in Ken will save you a lot of regret down the road. You are paying for his expertise. He is very opinionated, but you should want someone with strong opinions, because when it come to historic homes and design, there are right and wrong ways to go about restoration. And this is simply rooted in the fact that the builders and designers of homes from the 19th and early 20th c. were far more skilled and design-savvy than modern builders, who only care about making a buck. Ken is a great consultant if you want to keep it period and proper.

Do yourself a favor and hire these guys before any big painting project. Save yourself a ton of time and money by seeing your property in the perfect colors before you buy a single can of paint. Very professional. Will recommend them to everyone.

We are extremely pleased with the experience we've had in working with Ken. His color sense is extraordinary. He listens to your ideas and tastes but at the same time he maintains his faithfulness to the history of the building and is clearly spoken about what is "correct" from an architectural and color standpoint. We hired Ken to get some assistance as to what would be relevant color schemes for our Victorian house. We also wanted to get an accurate picture of what part of the house would be colored with each different color. We were not looking for an accurate representation of the actual color hues as they are hard to see on pictures and every computer shows them differently. The process became much simpler because Ken provided guides to follow, color schemes and combinations and a graphic representation of which color to put exactly where on the house. Also, the colors were not limited to very old Victorian colors but combinations that evolved over time but are still appropriate for our style home. Very helpful and would recommend to make the process much easier while keeping it era appropriate. Thank you also for being responsive quickly as we had certain time considerations.
