A 700 square foot space in the city gets a farmhouse makeover while preserving the clients’ love for all things colorfully eclectic and showcasing their favorite flea market finds! Featuring an entry way, living room, dining room and great room, the entire design and color scheme was inspired by the clients’ nostalgic painting of East Coast sunflower fields and a vintage console in bold colors. Shown in this Photo: floral occasional chairs in a cozy reading nook with tufted ottoman, plush area rug, red end table and oversized wall clock are all accented by custom linen drapery, wrought iron drapery rod, farmhouse lighting and accessories. | Photography Joshua Caldwell.
Great Room and Master Bedroom Addition with Sliding Barn Door and Oak Hardwood
Great Room and Master Bedroom Addition with Sliding Barn Door and Oak Hardwood

This home addition didn't go according to plan... and that's a good thing. Here's why. Family is really important to the Nelson's. But the small kitchen and living room in their 30 plus-year-old house meant crowded holidays for all the children and grandchildren. It was easy to see that a major home remodel was needed. The problem was the Nelson's didn't know anyone who had a great experience with a builder. The Nelson's connected with ALL Renovation & Design at a home show in York, PA, but it wasn't until after sitting down with several builders and going over preliminary designs that it became clear that Amos listened and cared enough to guide them through the project in a way that would achieve their goals perfectly. So work began on a new addition with a “great room” and a master bedroom with a master bathroom. That's how it started. But the project didn't go according to plan. Why? Because Amos was constantly asking, “What would make you 100% satisfied.” And he meant it. For example, when Mrs. Nelson realized how much she liked the character of the existing brick chimney, she didn't want to see it get covered up. So plans changed mid-stride. But we also realized that the brick wouldn't fit with the plan for a stone fireplace in the new family room. So plans changed there as well, and brick was ordered to match the chimney. It was truly a team effort that produced a beautiful addition that is exactly what the Nelson's wanted... or as Mrs. Nelson said, “...even better, more beautiful than we envisioned.” For Christmas, the Nelson's were able to have the entire family over with plenty of room for everyone. Just what they wanted. The outside of the addition features GAF architectural shingles in Pewter, Certainteed Mainstreet D4 Shiplap in light maple, and color-matching bricks. Inside the great room features the Armstrong Prime Harvest Oak engineered hardwood in a natural finish, Masonite 6-panel pocket doors, a custom sliding pine barn door, and Simonton 5500 series windows. The master bathroom cabinetry was made to match the bedroom furniture set, with a cultured marble countertop from Countertec, and tile flooring.

Bold white designs running across a rich tan background give this Summak rug a beautiful pattern. With the white design slightly raised higher than the background, this rug has additional character not found in many other types of rugs. The light colors found on this rug make it a great fit in a room with light colored walls and a dark floor. The contrast of the dark floor and light colored rug would allow the rug to really stand out and be a focal piece in the décor of the room. No strangers to remodeling, the new owners of this St. Paul tudor knew they could update this decrepit 1920 duplex into a single-family forever home. A list of desired amenities was a catalyst for turning a bedroom into a large mudroom, an open kitchen space where their large family can gather, an additional exterior door for direct access to a patio, two home offices, an additional laundry room central to bedrooms, and a large master bathroom. To best understand the complexity of the floor plan changes, see the construction documents. As for the aesthetic, this was inspired by a deep appreciation for the durability, colors, textures and simplicity of Norwegian design. The home’s light paint colors set a positive tone. An abundance of tile creates character. New lighting reflecting the home’s original design is mixed with simplistic modern lighting. To pay homage to the original character several light fixtures were reused, wallpaper was repurposed at a ceiling, the chimney was exposed, and a new coffered ceiling was created. Overall, this eclectic design style was carefully thought out to create a cohesive design throughout the home. Come see this project in person, September 29 – 30th on the 2018 Castle Home Tour.
