This large, broadly flat rear garden already benefited from a swimming pool but there was little else of interest in the space leaving the pool looking a little disconnected from the house and surrounding garden. The owners were keen to create a new contemporary scheme with 'an Ibiza vibe' that would make a great space for summer pool parties. The design brief was to create a new, entertaining space featuring a large patio, including paving to the pool area, creating a cohesive space for the whole family to enjoy.
To provide a change in visual levels, raised beds were built to wrap around the pool and planted with a mix of low-maintenance perennials and grasses to add height, texture and movement. A lower-level raised bed was created for use as a herb garden nearest the patio/dining area. Large format porcelain paving tiles were chosen to deliver the modern look the client was seeking. The porcelain was extended to the pool itself with the old sandstone coping stones removed and replaced with bespoke porcelain pool copings to tie everything together.
Screening to the pool equipment was installed by extending fence panels, all of which were painted black on completion for a blended finish. A large, open expanse of lawn was deliberately retained for outdoor play while the borders were widened to allow the introduction of structural evergreens and herbaceous plants to increase the garden's overall visual appeal, especially when viewed via a large floor-to-ceiling atrium window.

A lawn area beside the pool enclosure provides a soft play space. Tropical planting around the pool transitions to a Californian-inspired recycled sleeper garden bed, with feature Opuntia 'Burbank Spineless', Crassula and Kalanchoe bringing soft blue/grey break in the lush green colour scheme.

The exposed front yard has regular passersby on the sidewalk with a full view of the new water feature and shade garden entry garden. A new privacy fence mimics the historic iron fence.

This garden was overgrown and not used at all by the property owners. The homeowners wanted a contemporary courtyard that was family friendly and modern.
To achieve this, materials were chosen to match the stylish interior of the house. Also by using lighter coloured material we were able to brighten up the garden. The printed porcelain paving gave a contemporary modern feel whilst introducing added interest. Cedar batten fencing was used to clad the boundaries to minimise the oppressive feel of the high boundaries and to introduce more light into the garden.
The cedar timber floating bench now provides a place to sit and entertain. It is also the perfect height for the clients’ children to use as a play bench.
To brighten up the dull and dark corner by the french doors, the original steps were clad in beautiful blue and grey encaustic tiles to add much needed colour and interest in an area that had been previously neglected.
This contemporary courtyard is now bright and welcoming and used by the property owners and their children on a daily basis.

We wanted to create multiple functional spaces, perfect for them to entertain as they expressed to us their love of hosting. We designed two additional structures. A timber frame cabana with TV wall and fire feature create a large lounge space perfect for entertaining late into the evening. We worked with the original grade and added retaining walls with a lot of planting to separate the spaces and add green to the large interlock patios. Then, to anchor the dining space, a timber pergola provides some shade but mostly creates an intimate space for gathering.

Proving the good life doesn't have to be all about muddy allotments and wonky parsnips. Built towards the back of a large North-facing garden to maximise sun, it's comprised of a cottage style glass house, hardwood raised beds and cut-flower beds. Small design features such as old whisky barrels working as a water-butt, antique rhubarb forcers and an handmade oak bench help to create a perfect spot to enjoy a cup of tea whilst sowing seeds or taking a break from digging up homegrown potatoes.

The Zoysia's tufting habit echos the granite boulder forms, and contrasts in texture and colour.
