Searle & TaylorAs part of a large extension to a 1920’s house in Surrey, we undertook all the joinery requirements for the ground floor refurbishment, designing the kitchen, home bar, boot room and this utility room. We were recommended to the clients by Hampshire-based interior designers, Emily Steen and Danielle Marsh, founders of Wells and Maguire, with whom we have collaborated on numerous previous projects, and who created the overall interior design scheme.
This spacious 4530mm x 2400mm utility room leads directly from the open plan kitchen and living space and is accessed via a sliding pocket door with a fluted glass front next to the home bar. It was agreed in advance that the style and colour palette for the utility would reflect and complement the Shaker handmade furniture created for the in frame Classic Bespoke Shaker kitchen, except using oak MFC carcases and 22mm thick lay on doors which were then handpainted in Hage Blue by Farrow & Ball, the same colour used for the kitchen island and home bar.
While it needed to look aesthetically pleasing, the functions of this room are manifold being both a laundry room and a utility space. Housed within tall cabinetry is the boiler for the home next to a stacked washing machine and tumble dryer. Due to its proximity to the boiler, it is an airing and ironing room as well, and a hanging rail suspends from overhead cabinets to air clothing. It has a Belfast sink by Shaws, used for cleaning muddy boots and larger domestic items for the home and garden, and it is a herbarium. Potted plants sit alongside cooking and gardening books on open shelving and on the 30mm thick Misty Carrara Satinato quartz worktops, which have matching upstands. In addition, there are cupboards and top boxes for storing household items.

Higham FurnitureThe boot room cabinetry is finished in Paper and Paint Library Stone IV, using shaker fronts with 45mm rails and stiles. A built-in bench incorporates open shoe storage below, with a v-groove timber back panel fitted with Corston Mews hooks in Antique Brass. Above, a solid oak shelf finished in Rubio Monocoat White Oak provides practical display and storage, tying in with the oak detailing used throughout the house.

Higham FurnitureA Caple modern sit-on Belfast sink is set into a 30mm HS Carrara quartz worktop, paired with a Perrin & Rowe deck-mounted Ionian tap with lever handles and rinse in aged brass. Shaker cabinetry in Stone IV offers generous closed storage, complemented by oak shelving above in Rubio Monocoat White Oak. Wall-mounted arm lights add task lighting, while Corston Kilburn Antique Brass handles and knobs are used consistently across doors and drawers.
Handmade Kitchen CoElevating the heart of the home with a functional utility hidden behind the cabinets of the kitchen! It provides our client with a space to keep laundry out of view and an area designated for the laundry. Designed in our Mapesbury just like the kitchen, the cabinets have been hand-painted in Slate 1 to give a fresh and appealing look.

Adding to further functions of the room are Fisher and Paykel appliances, solid oak pull-out drying racks, a Shaws of Darwin Butler sink, a pull-out spray tap and durable worktops with a beautiful splashback in Honed marble.
When designing and planning the utility, Charlotte knew it had to be a practical space for laundry, cleaning products and for the fur baby, Ralph. A larger Shaws butler sink was chosen to wash the boy’s football boots, soak pans and bathe Ralph. The statement gold tap not only looks amazing but is so handy, as it gives the rinse hose option which is ideal for rinsing things off in the sink.
The idea of the pull-out shelf under the appliances, makes chores an easy task, a more organised space and no more bending as everything is at eye level. Look closely underneath the cabinets and there’s a space just for Ralph! This incorporated dog bed allows Ralph to take a nap in a quiet surrounding or somewhere to go after a lovely country walk.
In Charlotte’s own words, “The utility room has become one of the most used rooms in the house and if anyone is designing or planning their utility room really think about how you would like to use the space and what layouts work for you and your everyday life.”

Danny Broe ArchitectLaundry under stairs - We designed the laundry under the new stairs and carefully designed the joinery so that the laundry doors look like wall panels to the stair. When closed the laundry disappears but when it's open it has everything in it. We carefully detailed the laundry doors to have the stair stringer so that your eye follows the art deco balustrade instead.
Distinct Innovations Pty LtdBuilt on the beautiful Nepean River in Penrith overlooking the Blue Mountains. Capturing the water and mountain views were imperative as well as achieving a design that catered for the hot summers and cold winters in Western Sydney. Before we could embark on design, pre-lodgement meetings were held with the head of planning to discuss all the environmental constraints surrounding the property. The biggest issue was potential flooding. Engineering flood reports were prepared prior to designing so we could design the correct floor levels to avoid the property from future flood waters.
The design was created to capture as much of the winter sun as possible and blocking majority of the summer sun. This is an entertainer's home, with large easy flowing living spaces to provide the occupants with a certain casualness about the space but when you look in detail you will see the sophistication and quality finishes the owner was wanting to achieve.
