Because the sunniest place to grow vegetables is in the front yard, custom Cor-ten steel planters were designed as an attractive sculptural element, their graceful curves complementing the organic flow of the landscape. Informal gravel provides stable footing to walk and work, while remaining permeable to rain. Dwarf citrus grow in pots, and foundation plantings of Ribes sanguineum and Phormium 'Guardsman', and Ficus pumila vine anchor the home. Photo © Jude Parkinson-Morgan.
Mediterrasian Landscapes
This photo was taken four years after completion of the landscaping. Four years ago, we renovated this desolate, weedy front yard by creating terraces with beatiful stone retaining walls. Then we added colorful, drought tolerant plants that grow so well in San Francisco's Mediterranean climate. We installed drip irrigation and concealed it with attractive ginger rock pebble mulch.

This is the result after creating a low seating wall with a recirculating fountain in the center. Drought tolerant plantings flank either side and the new wood door is a pleasure to look at while providing privacy. These shrubs will get to 6' tall at maturity and will create a cozy area to hang out.

This cultivated wild meadow hosts California native and water-wise Mediterraneans alike for a soft, casual presence.

The transformation from a registered landslide hillside to a stunning garden oasis, is truly breathtaking. The pool was updated and the Corten steel arbor cleverly cantilevered on this 5 acre property. Using a crib wall system (Slope Block) allowed us to create lush terraces from toe to top - garden pathways lined with boulders create the illusion they were always there. The Slope Block was acid stained and planted so they eye can see just a hint of the bones through the lush California and Australian native plants and trees.

Once the lawn was removed, we were able to bring in mounds of new soil punctuated by gravel pathways leading to benches for visiting and viewing. This bench is one of two that face each other along the approach to the front door..
