Remanente Design LTDI helped transform what was once a basement under water to a basement worth entertaining in. The 2013 Calgary flood impacted the lives of so many families, including this particular family home in East Elbow. We were very privileged to work very closely with this family and become lifelong friends.
The renovation was truly incredible, considering when we took on this project, the basement was nothing but bare walls and concrete floors. We created a stylish, airy environment by infusing contemporary design with rustic elements. The basement under water transformed into a classy and usable space for this family of four to enjoy together. The design itself comprises an open-concept, a wine cellar, a play area, fitness area, and a beautiful steam-shower bathroom.
Allegretti Architects, Inc.One of the challenges of this project was to break down the old room barriers and develop a lively new matrix of linearly iterated experiences similar to an urban loft. The new space was to provide a open flowing hierarchy of composite addition and the original home spaces including living, kitchen, dining areas in the addition as well as a compact assembly of den, entertainment, guest space, and master bedroom suite in the original home. A minimalist approach was developed lining the special current of the wooden structural hull of brown maple cased rafter and girder architecture. Skylights, a vaulted hip roof structure and rigid foam insulation between the rafters were covered with drywall and or maple plywood. The trim is brown or natural maple with ¼” square corner beads. Light valances and wall mounted lights were used throughout. The kitchen was opened to the living and dining room and further illuminated with skylights as was the old living room and bedroom, which were converted into the open master suite closet and bathroom. New windows were relocated in some areas and borrowed interior transom window perforated the “cubicalness” of the original home. A cut glass chandelier was installed in the master bath as a parody of the architectural digest mentality of the main stream.

With magnificent views, the 12th-level, over 5000 SF unit Had at the same time suffered from a fussy décor that underplayed the outlook and gave it a rather close atmosphere, says Corredor.
“For the remodel, I wanted to achieve a look that reflected the spirit of the young owners but that would also be in keeping with a family home – the couple has five children. For me, this meant striking a delicate balance between the contemporary and traditional right through the interiors. Modern accents cater to their youthful tastes, while the more classical elements evoke the feeling of warmth and solidity appropriate to a family residence.”
The first thing the designer did was…….
“As soon as you step into the foyer from the lift, this run of marble leads the eye through the formal living space and out to the sea views,” says Corredor.
“I designed the entry in clean-lined green glass panels and laminated cherry wood, custom cut in a jigsaw-like pattern. The interlocking wood panels cover all four sides of a circulation hub, the nucleus of the home.” In the formal living area, a mother-of-pearl accent wall provides the leading contemporary feature. Most of the furniture pieces, fabrics and finishes were custom specified by Corredor…….
