Details Design and StagingThe front view of the cabin hints at the small footprint while a view of the back exposes the expansiveness that is offered across all four stories.
This small 934sf lives large offering over 1700sf of interior living space and additional 500sf of covered decking.
MGM BuildersThis project started as a cramped cape with little character and extreme water damage, but over the course of several months, it was transformed into a striking modern home with all the bells and whistles. Being just a short walk from Mackworth Island, the homeowner wanted to capitalize on the excellent location, so everything on the exterior and interior was replaced and upgraded. Walls were torn down on the first floor to make the kitchen, dining, and living areas more open to one another. A large dormer was added to the entire back of the house to increase the ceiling height in both bedrooms and create a more functional space. Habanero Architecture, PLLCThe project’s goal is to introduce more affordable contemporary homes for Triangle Area housing. This 1,800 SF modern ranch-style residence takes its shape from the archetypal gable form and helps to integrate itself into the neighborhood. Although the house presents a modern intervention, the project’s scale and proportional parameters integrate into its context.
Natural light and ventilation are passive goals for the project. A strong indoor-outdoor connection was sought by establishing views toward the wooded landscape and having a deck structure weave into the public area. North Carolina’s natural textures are represented in the simple black and tan palette of the facade.

Jared Frank StudioThe exterior paint colors, a dark slate with chartreuse accents on the windows, and a crimson door, become the accent colors inside. I also sourced the ipe chaise lounges with custom upholstery, the lemon-lime doormat, and the textured Gainey planter with stand.
UserThis Ketchum cabin retreat is a modern take of the conventional cabin with clean roof lines, large expanses of glass, and tiered living spaces. The board-form concrete exterior, charred cypress wood siding, and steel panels work harmoniously together. The natural elements of the home soften the hard lines, allowing it to submerge into its surroundings.
The Glo A5 triple-pane windows and doors were utilized for their advanced performance capabilities. Year-round comfort is achieved by the thermally-broken aluminum frame, low iron glass, multiple air seals, and argon-filled glazing. Advanced thermal technology was pivotal for the home’s design considering the amount of glazing that is used throughout the home. The windows and multiple 16’ sliding doors are one of the main features of the home’s design, focusing heavily on the beauty of Idaho. The doors also allow easy access to the deck, creating an eagle-eye view of the Valley.

This LEED-certified project was a substantial rebuild of a 1960's home, preserving the original foundation to the extent possible, with a small amount of new area, a reconfigured floor plan, and newly envisioned massing. The design is simple and modern, with floor to ceiling glazing along the rear, connecting the interior living spaces to the landscape. The design process was informed by building science best practices, including solar orientation, triple glazing, rain-screen exterior cladding, and a thermal envelope that far exceeds code requirements.
