Contemporary home in a conservation area

Set in the middle of a Georgian town square, in the centre of a conservation area, this home was not only overlooked but also overshadowed by other buildings and trees and was dark and underwhelming. Our challenge was to replace it with a contemporary home, built to Passive Haus standards, that was filled with light. The fact that this was in a conservation area meant that this had to be a stunning piece of high-quality architecture. Using layers of screening, we were able to provide privacy they didn’t have previously. Opening to the rear, the property embraces the qualities of the site. The house uses a sandstone effect render, contrasted with linear bricks and sharply detailed glazing. We modelled light paths throughout the day by strategically placing roof lights and courtyards to bring in light from above, without compromising privacy. We worked closely with planning and heritage consultants to put together a comprehensive planning strategy.
