Whole House Remodel
Powder rooms are inherently small, but shouldn't be boring. Such was the desire for the new powder room designed for the Irwin residence. The client wanted to express a more contemporary flair in this space of the newly remodeled home; which was generally of the arts and crafts style.
The existing powder room had two entry doors. One was for the general family and guests, and the other allowed access to and from one of the children's bedrooms. It had a non-descript pedestal sink along one wall with an angled soffit above. The toilet was tucked into a recessed niche on the opposite wall.
The solution was to eliminate the door leading to the bedroom, which then provided a longer full wall to locate the new custom vanity piece. The vanity base was designed to be table-like, that supports an integrated top/bowl sink. The cherry wood base has arts and crafts details, with chunky contemporary proportions. The cherry wood is also present in the adjacent living room mantle piece. These identical woods help unify the two spaces. The vanity wall was accented with a full wall of a basket weave like tile, whereas the remaining walls where painted a dark chocolate color, which helped soften the corners in a small space.
By eliminating the door to the bedroom, the powder room can now have the privacy it requires for guests and family members. The new wall allowed a special place for a focal point of a unique vanity piece. Guests also have a relaxing space to refresh themselves in.
