The kitchen layout looks quite functional. How did you design the order of the cabinets in the island, in terms of the location of the sink, D/W, trash pullout? The person doing dishes is close to the person being by the stove, what is the distance between the island and the both sides of cabinets Thanks!
You bet. You'll see from the attached enlargement of the kitchen layout that the sink and the range are slightly off-set from each other. We find this works really well when actually cooking. You can rinse something in the sink, slice it on the counter, and pivot to the stove without having to take a lot of extra steps. If two people are working in the space, it's very efficient without them bumping into each other, because the distance between the island and the stove is just under 4 ft (3' 9"). You can pull the dishwasher door down and still move around it easily.
We like to think about work flow when designing a kitchen. In this case, the pull-out trash is to the right of the sink (and a narrow cookie sheet cabinet is to its right, anchoring the end of the island). At the end of a meal, you scrape plates into the trash, rinse them in the sink, and put them in the dishwasher, working from the right to the left. The oven door and dishwasher door and pull-out trash will not interfere with each other. The fridge is opposite the island, so you can unload ingredients right onto the island to make your sandwich etc. You have a little more than 3 ft of counter space on either side of the stove, which is ideal for meal prep.
Make sure you have at least 15" of overhang at the island bar for it to feel good...you need to be able to tuck a stool under the counter and you need room for a person's knees! 12" is not sufficient.
The refrigerator sticks out beyond the edge of the adjacent counter/cabinets, so you need to account for that. We design so that you're able to pull a bottom freezer drawer open and not run into the island. In this kitchen, there's 4 ft between the counter next to the fridge and the island and (depending on your fridge) approximately 3' 5" from the fridge to the island. If you go much bigger than 4 ft, it starts to feel like wasted space, while 3 ft is definitely too tight.
