What to do with this area?

To the left of the vent intake is the reach-in pantry. Across from that is a built in desk switch cabinet uppers.
In this space, wife wants a cabinet with floating shelves above. Measurements: 53-1/2” wide, 27-1/2” deep, 82-1/2” high. Wide enough for 30” + 24” base cabinets (assuming the sheetrock is 1/2” thick that I can remove).

What do you suggest, base cabinets or search high and low for a buffet or something that would fit??

How about a closet with adjustable shelving? Decide what your greatest storage needs are.

If, after you remove the sheetrock, the space is still small, you'll have a mess to fix. It' go with a buffet. A quick google shows lots of options for 52" wide cabinets or storage systems.

Nu ved jeg ikke, hvor handy i er? Men en ide, som jeg selv har haft til mit værelse er denne: Når i står op om morgenen udløser i låsen, således en gasfjeder skubber madrassen op. Basen som sengen står på fungerer også som opbevaringsrum. Ideen er at basen kun fylder det rum som i har bag døren, således den ville kunne åbnes helt. Når i skal i seng om aftenen, så lukker i døren og trækker madrassen ned og låser den. Her er lige en lynhurtig koncepttegning på en post-it lap :)

Choosing an Interior Designer If you are thinking of working with an interior designer, be aware that the relationship is, by its very nature, intimate. Assess Your Work Style Before you pick up the phone and start calling prospects, spend a few moments thinking carefully about your preferred method of working. This little bit of soul searching will go a long way to ensuring you hire the right person, and will help to lay a solid foundation for a successful working relationship. For starters, think carefully about your answer to these questions: At what level do you want to be involved in the creative process? Do you want to be consulted on the nitty-gritty, day-to-day details, or are you more interested in big picture issues? Similarly, at what level do you want to be involved in the product research? Are you looking for comprehensive, "soup to nuts" guidance, or do you consider yourself design-savvy and only in need of assistance with color, space planning and resources? Are you a visual person or a tactile person? Will you be satisfied with a designer showing you photos of products, or do you prefer to see and feel everything before deciding whether it is right for you? Do you prefer to be shown many options or fewer? Are you open to the input of others? Are you able to make choices with confidence, or do you tend to vacillate? What are your expectations in terms of a timeline Determine the Scope of Your Project The scope of a project to some extent dictates the qualifications and experience required of the interior designer you are hiring. If you are building a new home or addition, or undertaking a major renovation to existing space, you are likely already working with an architect. This is good. Architects and designers often work in concert, balancing the aesthetics of the home's structure, or "bones," with the interior furnishings and finishes. You may want to get your architect involved in the selection of the interior designer—whether it's recommending someone he or she has already worked with, or using one of the interior designers the firm may have on staff. If you're redecorating a single room or have a limited budget for a space that does not require structural change, you may not need an interior designer at all. You may be happy hiring a specialist, such as a color consultant, who can work with your existing furnishings and help you revamp the space with new paint color and fabric selections.

Hej Mischa Ved ikke om du har fundet en løsning i mellemtiden, men her er i hvert fald mit bud :) Det bliver i øvrigt lidt “løse” bud, da jeg ikke ved hvordan stuen ser ud/de mål vi arbejder med, but here goes: Din ønskeseddel til stuen er som følgende: • U-sofa + sofabord • Bogreol • Skænk • Skrivebord • Akvarie  Mit nr. 1 tip til at “få plads til det hele” er at kombinere forskellige funktioner i ét møbel, og bygge møbler til mål. Med lidt god vilje ville man faktisk kunne kombinere de 4 nederste ting på listen i ét stort reolmøbel. Dog tænker jeg at vi kan starte lidt i det små, så her er nogle kombinationer jeg tænker måske ville virke for jer: Bogreol+skrivebord: Jeg vil anbefale en reol-væg. Kan laves som reol eller hylder (nemmere). Lad dem gerne (hvis pladsen er der) gå over døren som her: Skrivebordet kan nemt indbygges i reolen, se f.eks. hvordan de har gjort det her: “Skænk”+skrivebord: Nu ved jeg naturligvis ikke hvad det er for en skænk i har i tankerne, men en “moderne” version af en skænk (i form af f.eks. køkkenmoduler) kan også nemt sammensættes med et skrivebord. Se bl.a. her: Indbygget akvarie: Akvariet kan evt. indbygges i en reol. Jeg ville overveje at skippe den "regulære" træskænk (igen, det er et møbel med én funktion), og i stedet bruge akvariet som et form for TV-bord: Eller evt. indbygge den i reolvæggen Sofa + “sofabord”: Det her er selvfølgelig en smagssag, men jeg synes personligt at en u-sofa ser federe ud når den står selv, uden et sofabord presset ind mellem chaiselong’erne. På den anden side er det meget rart med et sted at stille popkornene ;). Hvad man kan gøre er at installere en lav hylde bag sofaen til at fungere som usynligt sofabord: Males hylden i samme farve som væggen, blender den super fint ind. Er der stikkontakt i nærheden er det oplagt at lave en ladestation til mobiler mm. Derudover kan man også sætte flere hylder i, så der er plads i siden til bøger/magasiner/tablet/bærbar. Her er i øvrigt en plantegning af hvordan en opstilling kunne se ud: Her er TV'et sat ovenpå skænken, men i stedet kunne man evt. bruge akvariet som TV-møbel, eller indbygge det i bogreolen (her tegnet som kombineret bogreol/skrivebord). Håber det kunne bruges til noget :)

If what you're looking for is a kitchen cabinet style unit, buy a 48" cabinet and place a filler panel (same finish as the cabinet) on each side, and your floating shelves above.

You mention a kitchen cabinet, but this is not a kitchen, based on the carpet in that area? I would nix any floating shelves. What would you be storing, extra dishes, linens, canned goods? I would try a free-standing piece before building something in…..because of the carpet.

@grapefruit, the carpet would be cut back if we went that route. There is a pantry, wife wants more storage for large items taking space in the pantry.

If you want storage for large items, do you want to see them in open storage? Shelves and a closet door might be the best option.

Once you say “large items” my brain says “we need a door”. Large stuff can rarely be attractively arranged so make it a closed custom pantry/closet for all those large hard-to-fit items we all own.

Have a cabinet company come out and make you a built in. Just the bottom half of floating shelves are wanted.

Agree with needing more views and context- use of the adjacent room. Opportunity for storage, yes, but also there’s an electrical outlet, so consider whether want to enclose that or creat a nice surface material ( furniture puce vs counter material) keep enclosed as in use appliance inside ( seems less likely in carpeted room) , or need a small lamp, or serving. Or closed lower + upper cabinet with open space for inters, seasonal decor.
Doesn’t seem like open shelving above is good idea if intend “ storage, unless intent is lower closed storage with upper display shelves for curated accessories. Again is why need to understand the room this is in.
Need to take a good inventory of what needs storing so can think about the dimensions, & whether can be met by available second- hand furniture, stick cabinetry vs custom.

Agree with Patricia. What room is this and what kind of large items? Fancy platters? Glass pitchers? Kitchenaid mixer? Toaster oven? Coolers? Suitcases? Bulk-size bags of sugar? Gallons of wine? Dust busters? You didn’t tell us.

because buffet versus cabinetry doesn't matter if we think that the solution is a closet. it's rare that "large stuff we need to store" is pretty, so a door lets you put as much of it in there as you want!

Agreed. The function is huge when making a decision for the space. What comes to my mind is are you planning to display items? Use this as a servery for your guests to walk up and help themselves when entertaining. Or specifically storage for overflow of goods. I would begin there.

“large items taking up space in the pantry” include plate chargers, pitchers, etc. Collectively, they take up necessary space in the pantry (see doors opposite the vent intake).

The picture was taken in the dining room. The space in question is part of a pass through from the dining room to the kitchen (wood flooring).

Sounds like a Butler’s Pantry. So I’d go with lisevd’s idea.

I’m not hearing any reason for open shelving. Platters, pitchers won’t be usable in open storage.
A base cabinet provides deep but “ stoop down “ storage- ok though. But then you’ve got the upper space. You could do the coffee-
/ wine bar thing with a countertop and add wall cabinet above but then that cabinet is shallower - still could be good for pitchers, glassware, anything that fits on ~ 11 “ shelving.
Hence the questions about would you rather have more of a closet, with full doors, trimmed out to match pantry, simpler shelving , deeper at base.

Whether to hunt for a furniture item is matter of style & taste- if want to add an antique or vintage ( or good faux) wood tones or painted, for interest. In my experience it’s harder to get really deep such items- hutches or china cabinets not close to 24” + deep, so in a lot of cases you’d be putting emphasis in the beauty or fun/ quirkiness of the item, and using if for some things that fit, or re- purpose well, rather than getting storage more tailored to your possessions. So it just depends.
