The new open-plan kitchen and living room have a sloped roof extension with skylights and large bi-folding doors. We designed the kitchen bespoke to our client's individual requirements with 6 seats at a large double sides island, a large corner pantry unit and a hot water tap. Off this space, there is also a utility room. The seating area has a three-seater and a two-seater sofa which both recline. There is also still space to add a dining table if the client wishes in the future.

This residence was designed to be a rural weekend getaway for a city couple and their children. The idea of ‘The Barn’ was embraced, as the building was intended to be an escape for the family to go and enjoy their horses. The ground floor plan has the ability to completely open up and engage with the sprawling lawn and grounds of the property. This also enables cross ventilation, and the ability of the family’s young children and their friends to run in and out of the building as they please. Cathedral-like ceilings and windows open up to frame views to the paddocks and bushland below. As a weekend getaway and when other families come to stay, the bunkroom upstairs is generous enough for multiple children. The rooms upstairs also have skylights to watch the clouds go past during the day, and the stars by night. Australian hardwood has been used extensively both internally and externally, to reference the rural setting.

The corner site, at the junction of St. Matthews Avenue and Chamberlain Way and delimited by a garden with mature trees, is located in a tranquil and leafy area of Surbiton in Surrey. Located in the north-east cusp of the site, the large two-storey Victorian suburban villa is a large family home combined with business premises, whereby part of the Ground Floor is used as Nursery. The property has been extended by FPA to improve the internal layout and provide additional floor space for a dedicated kitchen and a large Living Room with multifunctional quality. FPA has developed a proposal for a side extension to replace a derelict garage, conceived as a subordinate addition to the host property. It is made up of two separate volumes facing Chamberlain Way: the smaller one accommodates the kitchen and the primary one the large Living Room. The two volumes - rectangular in plan and both with a mono pitch roof - are set back from one another and are rotated so that their roofs slope in opposite directions, allowing the primary space to have the highest ceiling facing the outside. The architectural language adopted draws inspiration from Froebel’s gifts and wood blocs. A would-be architect who pursued education as a profession instead, Friedrich Froebel believed that playing with blocks gives fundamental expression to a child’s soul, with blocks symbolizing the actual building blocks of the universe. Although predominantly screened by existing boundary treatments and mature vegetation, the new brick building initiates a dialogue with the buildings at the opposite end of St. Matthews Avenue that employ similar materials and roof design. The interior is inspired by Scandinavian design and aesthetic. Muted colours, bleached exposed timbers and birch plywood contrast the dark floor and white walls. Gianluca Maver

This bespoke shelving was designed and made to fit two alcoves each side of the chimneybreast in a room used by the family as a snug, TV and games room. The use of Zebrano veneer gives a light modern and stylish touch to the room. The veneer is used to create LED lit display shelving; a two door cupboard to conceal the games consoles sits above a log store in each alcove. The veneer is also used on the skirting linking the two halves of the design.

Cupboard Cherry Wood From the outside this cupboard has a tight rectangular volume, with very slim legs of stainless steel strips. The seams of the planks continue, as is the case with the grains. The layout is asymmetric from the inside, with a small cupboard on the left, a drawer in the middle and a broader cupboard on the right. The cherry-wood parts are mutually connected with a loose spring. Stainless steel strips have been included In the wooden parts in order to limit the action of the wood. The legs emerge from this hidden steel construction. Because the rotating parts and the drawer under the mitre fall in the piece of furniture, and the seams between the parts are just as large as the other seams, it can hardly be seen that this piece of furniture can be opened. Engaged by the client to update this 1970's architecturally designed waterfront home by Frank Cavalier, we refreshed the interiors whilst highlighting the existing features such as the Queensland Rosewood timber ceilings. The concept presented was a clean, industrial style interior and exterior lift, collaborating the existing Japanese and Mid Century hints of architecture and design.
