Principles of Design

Symmetrical Balance- All parts of the design are completely symmetrical and equally distributed to create a sense of stability. This is a formal balance, as seen in the image above. Each chair, each lamp, everything is completely symmetrical.

Asymmetrical Balance- Parts of this design are not completely identical, but they take up the same amount of visual space. The sofa and chairs, while they are not the same, take up the same amount of visual space/weight. Same goes for the book shelves, they take up the same amount of space, but do not have the same things on them. This type of asymmetrical balance offers more variety and visual excitement.

Radial Balance- The design radiates outwards from the center, the center in this case being the fire pit. The chairs, brick wall, and even the brick floor radiate outward from the fire pit.

Regular Rhythm- This is the same repetition over and over again. The wallpaper is repeating over and over again through the green squares in a constant regular rhythm.

Random Rhythm- On the shelves, the plants/books/plants/etc. are placed randomly at different intervals. Yet the shelving still has rhythm.

Proportion- The bathtub visually divides the design/space. The bathtub is taking up 1/3 of the wall space and divides the wall and both sides of the room.

Emphasis- The sun mirror is the focal point in this room. It is large in size and is in the center of the room. Also there is no other gold color in the room except for the mirror. This draws attention to it and catches the eye, allowing it to dominate, but not overpower the room.
