The quality of the work is excellent. Communicating for the purpose of planning and providing feedback is easy due to their rapid response and liberal use of email and cell contact. They responded well to feedback regarding the work site when we had complaints about dust and so forth. The quality of their work holds up; our bathroom completed in 2008 continues to be in terrific condition. They were described by the person who referred them, an architect, very accurately. “My husband and I had debated for several months if we should move to a larger space, or renovate our current home for our expanding family. I had brought this up with Rick Byrd, the owner of Byrd Design and Build (BDB), and he immediately came to our house to talk with us through all of our options. He walked through our house and really gave us some amazing plans to make the space we already had more usable and more modern and up to date. This was the perfect option for us, considering we were expecting our first child. He laid out all of the different renovation plans we could have and really helped us envision a space catered to our wants and needs. My husband works from home, so we thought it was going to be a difficult journey to do an almost complete gut job of our basement and first floor kitchen/bedroom/bath, but BDB did an amazing job accommodating him and being cautious of the space we weren’t renovating. During the construction process, all of the subcontractors of BDB were extremely nice, non-invasive and very courteous of everything in the house. Darren, the project manager, was always attentive and mindful of our timeline, which was shortened due to the arrival of our new baby. We have the perfect new nursery, brand new kitchen and bathroom, and an entirely finished basement all just in time for our son. Everything was completed in a timely fashion and in pristine condition. We are obsessed with our basically “new” house!”

“Landis is simply, the cream of the crop, I'm qualified to say it. I know it because I've had Landis come three times now, since 2007, have seen the quality of the work they do, but just as importantly, the excellence they show by bringing the client/s into the process, every step of the way. When you work with a design build firm, you have the benefit of working with those who understand today's current costs. Unlike architects who have seasoned understanding, a design build firm knows what wallboard costs this week. With computer assisted design, you can get under the hood with designers and try something here, or move something there. Great fun, they 'let you drive' sometime, you're part of an evolutionary decision process. No need for 'change orders' if you were there at the planning. With each of three projects, Landis had to go through the county historic board. Much of it is prior experience with them, telephone contact, but Landis actually showed up to the evening board hearing...I did not. Shows their level of excellence. It's pathfinding for Landis and for Historic itself, dealing with top drawer professionalism. With this current project, Landis designed the deck that translated perfectly from what I stated, I.e., good design and sturdy. Rather than worry that 'this fella who works from the back of the truck' is doing it right, Landis has given methodical attention and has had inspections as the permitting requires. The stairs have three stringers, the previous deck staircase had but two, and the stairs wobbled in a short time. Landis is an asset to the DC Metro area. On the 2007 project, I learned from the electricians and plumber....they want to work with Landis. As for why, I guessed right....Landis is above board, keeps tight timelines, streamlines so nobody shows up only to have to wait around. Plus, they're just fun to work with, knowledge aside. Told them, it's like having brothers-in-law in the trades and not having to buy the beer.”

“After meeting Nicole, I realized that I’ve watched to much HGTV. It takes longer than an hour to put a large addition onto your 81 year old home. Nicole has a great sense of style. Nicole’s suggestions were on point and she was very patient explaining everything to my 80 year old mother. The project took longer than expected due to COVID but the end result was worth the wait. “Our kitchen and family room renovation was not our first construction project, having done 3 other major projects and built a house long-distance. We started this project with another design-build firm that has an excellent reputation in Washington, DC area, but we quickly severed that relationship--and walked away from our deposit--because neither the design nor the communication was what we wanted. The decision to change firms and start over ended up being a great decision. So we began interviewing--again. This time we hit the jackpot with Bruce Wentworth of Wentworth Inc. His three design proposals were inspired and gave us all of our wish list: walk-in pantry, no upper cabinets over the work areas (but lots of storage), large island, butler's pantry, clutter-free paper storage system, more open kitchen/family room, and overall a kitchen and family room that are a better fit for our 1926 house. We also had lots of little things that we wanted such as no outlets on the backsplash--no easy feat in those areas where we had no upper cabinets--and custom-designed pantry shelves, but they solved each item on my wish list, brilliantly. Before the construction began, we had a meeting so that we knew what to expect. Did any surprises arise? Of course they did--this is a house built in 1926! However, all those surprises were solved seamlessly by the design-build team. Any time I had a question or needed design advice, I was totally comfortable calling the architects and or talking with the lead carpenter, depending on what the question was. In addition, one of the architects went with me on all shopping trips to pick out, for instance, the countertops, the sink, the tile for the backsplash, the faucet, etc. Never was I sent to a showroom on my own. Sometimes, the architects had assembled the samples for me at their office and I made my decisions there. What an easy process that was, especially since the architects had already narrowed down the choices for me. All of the team members were professional, friendly, and as detail-oriented as I am. Oh, did I mention that the project was on budget AND on time? And the final result? Beyond our wildest dreams--everyone who walks in says it looks exactly like us, fits the house, and is gorgeous. Would I hire Wentworth again? Absolutely.”
