Each of the materials was chosen for a balance of richness and simplicity. The Kebony decking continues the rich color tone set by the oiled Cedar shingle and traditional Japanese Shou Sugi Ban siding on the rear facade of the house. The California Gold Slate for the rear yard patio adds additional texture and depth to the ground plane. The powder-coated metal railings enclose the deck and partition the dog run and bike parking area from the main rear yard. The eclectic plant mix blends California natives with other Mediterranean plants for a variety of color, texture and seasonality.

Festuca 'Siskyou Blue' makes for a striking lawn border or lawn. It's silvery-blue color delivers compelling contrast with Spanish tile rooves, terra cotta flagstone patios, and deeper greens. Its simple, predictable, mounding form also makes it a great match for modern structures.

Later in the spring, amidst dense greenery, purple Aristada grasses catch the eye. The movement of the purple seed heads in even a light breeze is mesmerizing! Photo: Lesly Hall Photography

High shade provides a perfect environment for Alum Root in this Novato front yard. Its frothy blooms charm visitors in spring and early summer. This is a really good plant to put under California Live Oaks as they need very little summer water. Far tougher than it looks, and easy maintenance.

Lawn Removal & photo by Verne Pershing
"Our backyard needed a do-over. It was all lawn, needing so much water that when the drought hit we had to stop watering it (Sadly the yard looked about the same). Verne and his team designed a beautiful garden full of California native plants. They listened to our thoughts and ideas, and creatively and professionally put together an amazing plan. They were thoughtful about the ecology of the habitat, both plant and wildlife, as well as our budget. They have a full service of skills. Beyond landscaping, they have built a fenced in vegetable garden and installed sheds with concrete pads. I think my yard looks better then some of the worlds famous gardens.
