Hortulus Animae llc - Mindful Garden Design
A celebrated actor couple’s relaxing Hudson Valley retreat stands at the highpoint of a spectacular east-facing slope. The house boasts sweeping views of the Berkshires and surrounding hills and fields. Nestled amongst 14 acres of managed meadows and mature, mixed woodland, the garden’s rustic hardscaping, sitting walls, steps and paths, spirals, terracing and benches are constructed from rough hewn slabs of local New York fieldstone and granite reclaimed from the site excavation. Durable swaths of deer resistant native plants explode with color throughout the season. Simple, yet thoughtful detailing sets the tone for a relaxing and inspiring atmosphere, where pollinators can thrive and creative minds can be set free.

Shanti means ‘Peace' in Sanskrit and this garden, with its series of lush, elegant and surprising garden ‘rooms' lives up to its name. While each room has its own unique feel from a formal walking garden to an exuberant butterfly garden, they all offer the visitor tranquility. All are punctuated by superb stonework and elegant and unique plantings. You will find very little lawn here and instead find flowering shrubs, trees, perennials, grasses, and even unusual and striking annuals planted to delight human and butterfly visitors. This exquisite garden is the result of a close working and personal relationship between the owners and the garden's designer: together they have created a year-round living work of art. As one crosses the lawn of the backyard to approach the bank down to the water, they pass through ledges of natural stone creating steps and a seating area that blends into the change in elevation and looks as if it has always been there.

A garden in an open, rural landscape shows several faces and stories. A multileveled wooded garden for summer parties in the cool of the forest. A small lake with floating wooden paths, which embrace sitting areas, a fireplace and an isle, from which one observes all different moods of nature. This garden is a romantic detail of Monets waterlilies, the light falling through the majestic trees, a piece of arcadia.

The plants leading down the bank to Lake Michigan were planted in groups and designed with complimentary colors in mind. Here, the plum foliage of the smokebush and the eggplant foliage of the elderberry, set off the chartreuse of the sedum and sumac and enhance the purple palette of the magenta peonies and the froth of violet veronica.
