Mike Besley’s Holland Street design has won the residential alterations/additions award category of the BDAA Sydney Regional Chapter Design Awards 2020. Besley is the director and building designer of ICR Design, a forward-thinking Building Design Practice based in Castle Hill, New South Wales.
Boasting a reimagined entry veranda, this design was deemed by judges to be a great version of an Australian coastal house - simple, elegant, tasteful. A lovely house well-laid out to separate the living and sleeping areas. The reworking of the existing front balcony and footprint is a creative re-imagining of the frontage. With good northern exposure masses of natural light, and PV on the roof, the home boasts many sustainable features. The designer was praised by this transformation of a standard red brick 70's home into a modern beach style dwelling.

Lauren Smyth designs over 80 spec homes a year for Alturas Homes! Last year, the time came to design a home for herself. Having trusted Kentwood for many years in Alturas Homes builder communities, Lauren knew that Brushed Oak Whisker from the Plateau Collection was the floor for her!
She calls the look of her home ‘Ski Mod Minimalist’. Clean lines and a modern aesthetic characterizes Lauren's design style, while channeling the wild of the mountains and the rivers surrounding her hometown of Boise.

As a coastal holiday weekend retreat, this home needed to offer relaxing spaces, operate as a practical home away from home, and be durable for guests.
The pavilion-style floorplan easily resolves the desire for separation/relaxing areas – separating the bedrooms in one wing from open-plan living and entertaining spaces. An interior black feature wall in the centre of the home creates a connection to the exterior vertical black weatherboards and horizontal cedar cladding.
The clean lined kitchen mixes colours – including black and white – with textures – including warm hued oak cabinetry and cool stone bench tops and splashback. The integrated fridge and hidden walk-in pantry complete the crisp, easy maintenance streamlined look.

Modern Victorian/Craftsman single-family, taking inspiration from traditional Chicago architecture. Clad in Evening Blue Hardie siding.

This is the renovated design which highlights the vaulted ceiling that projects through to the exterior.

With expansive fields and beautiful farmland surrounding it, this historic farmhouse celebrates these views with floor-to-ceiling windows from the kitchen and sitting area. Originally constructed in the late 1700’s, the main house is connected to the barn by a new addition, housing a master bedroom suite and new two-car garage with carriage doors. We kept and restored all of the home’s existing historic single-pane windows, which complement its historic character. On the exterior, a combination of shingles and clapboard siding were continued from the barn and through the new addition.
One of our most remarkable transformations, this remains a stunning property in a very prominent location on the street scene. The house previously was very dated but with a large footprint to work with. The footprint was extended again by about 50%, in order to accommodate effectively two families. Our client was willing to take a risk and go for a contemporary design that pushed the boundaries of what many others would feel comfortable with. We were able to explore materials, glazing and the overall form of the proposal to such an extent that the cladding manufacturers even used this project as a case study.
The proposal contains a cinema room, dedicated playroom and a vast living space leading to the orangery. The children’s bedrooms were all customised by way of hand-painted murals in individual themes.
